Welcome to USTA Leagues in Los Angeles!
Whether you are new to tennis, or just new to Los Angeles, you will find plenty of action on the courts. You should find answers to your questions here, but feel free to contact us if there's something missing. We look forward to having you join the Los Angeles tennis family!
This is a list of the different types of Team leagues, click here for more details.
Mixed Doubles Super Seniors (60+) SCTA (Fall) Doubles Adult (Spring) League Seniors (50+) Senior Mixed Doubles (50+) Tri-Level
The only non-team league is Flex League, which is all singles, and has seasons year round.
Los Angeles, in general, is enormous, but the LA USTA area is bordered by the 101, the 5, the 105 freeways, and the coast. Our matches are played at clubs and parks within this area, which includes the following clubs and cities:
Cheviot Hills, Westchester, Westwood, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Inglewood, Beverly Hills, Mountaingate, Rancho Cienega, Koreatown, Griffith Park, and Santa Monica.
The area is defined by the yellow boundaries on this LA area map
Most league matches are played on weekends. Each team decides whether they will play their home matches on Saturdays or Sundays, and at what time.
There may be weekday leagues forming for women during some seasons, so check back here.
Teams may form through friendships, tennis clinics, or even complete strangers all looking to play. There is a Captain and a co-Captain to organize the match details for the team, communicating with the other Captains, and the facilities where they play their home matches. The match schedules typically call for one match to be played during each weekend in the season. Teams may choose to hold additional practices and work with a coach, but it's not required. Each team may also decide to wear team colors or uniforms, but it's also not required.
The team format means each player does not HAVE to play every match, because let's face it, we do have other things in our lives (or do you?!) Working toward a goal as a team, and supporting team mates builds cameraderie, and when your team wins, the celebration is sweet!
There are several ways to get involved on a team:
Your team Captain will give you a team number, and you can then sign up for the team. Use the "Register for a Team, Self-rate" instructions found on the "Step-by-Step" page.
We appreciate our Team Captains! Janet has over 7 years of experience as a Captain, with teams that started as a bunch of people having fun matches and gradually morphing into teams that win. Lori has been a winning Captain for over 15 years, bringing teams to Sectionals and Nationals many times.
Captains get to pay only $3 for the season when they sign up, a small token perhaps, but nice. When we hold meetings for Captains prior to a season, we hand out "Captains' Gifts", and review rules and/or issues that affect league teams.
Here is a list of duties that a Captain generally does:
Captains usually have a Co-Captain to help with all this as well, sometimes even three people can work together.
Click here to see many of the resources available to Captains.
USTA membership is required for League Play. Annual membership is $44 for an individual, with savings for 5 or more years, or for a family membership.
The USTA will charge $21 for each team you join.
There may be team costs for match courts, tennis balls and practices.
Flex League is the latest program from USTA, designed to give people a chance to play more singles matches, or to get back into tennis after some time off without committing to a team. It's also a great way to meet new tennis players if you've just relocated, or will be here on an extended vacation.
